How many 2021 high school students made the National Merit Semifinals?
Roughly 7,500 students have been selected as finalists for the National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Committee (NMSC) uses its own Selection Index to rank applicants and designate semifinalists to ensure a more fair distribution of semifinalists across the country.
About 7,500 rising seniors per year are chosen to receive one of the approximately 30,600 scholarships offered by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Winners are selected at random without regard to the winners' monetary situations or their intended institutions of higher education. Less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors are considered academically gifted.

To estimate a student's degree of achievement, we compound their PSAT and NMSQT results to create their Selection Index score. Each candidate's skills and talents are evaluated using this score. This is not the primary criterion for acceptance into the program, though.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is one possible source of financial aid for college. Over the course of the program, over $2.5 million will be distributed to roughly 2,500 students. A high PSAT or NMSQT score, a well-written personal statement, and a strong academic history are all requirements for admission.
